The NMGS constitution consists of a set of rules that deal with the day-to -day affairs of the society. As the society grows the document has undergone several reviews, revision, and amendments to accommodate changes. The current constitution which came into effect in 1988 is presently under review in the light of the new Mining Engineers and Geoscientists Decree 40 of 1990.

The second part of the constitution deals with the benevolent Fund of which NMGS is the Trustee. The fund is expected to be a source from which financial assistance could be given to needy members, their families and the families of deceased members.

• The advancement and practice of Mining, Geological Sciences and metallurgy
• A means for acquisition, preservation and dissemination of mining, geological, geophysical and metallurgical knowledge.
• Publishing at least one journal of the proceedings of the society annually.
• Upholding and promoting the ethics and interest of the professions.

The society is represented on several government commissions, technical committees and training institutes e.g. Energy Commission, National Technical Committee on Earthquake Phenomena, Governing Council of the Petroleum Training Institute, Warri, etc.
