Technical Sessions The Technical event of the conference will start with the plenary session dwelling on the theme of the Conference: “Emerging Trends in Sustainable Development of Solid Minerals and Energy Resources”. Discussants will comprise of invited quest speakers from relevant fields with cognate experience who have made significant impact in their careers. This will be followed briefly by oral and poster presentations. Those interested in presenting scientific papers during the Owerri 2009 Conference are kindly requested to submit abstracts, which should conform to the following guidelines. A. Should not exceed 250 words. B. Should contain title, name(s) contact address and essence of the work done, as well as results and conclusions. Please, note that the closing date for submissions of abstracts is 31st December 2008 while authors whose abstracts have been accepted will be informed by 31st Janaury,2009. Authors of accepted abstracts will be required to submit the full texts of their papers before 15th February,2009 for consideration of the NMGS/Total Award.

). Giving the following details: A. Nature of presentation (oral or poster) B. Equipment required for presentation such as overhead slide or multimedia Projector; C. Whether the presenter is a student or a full-time professional. Persons whose abstracts have been accepted will be duly informed on the schedule of their presentation. The Council (NMGS) has directed that persons whose abstracts have been accepted must ensure that their papers are presented or would face possible sanctions to do so. Participants will be accredited and badges issues to participants after the full payment of registration fees which should be worn at all times at the conference venue. Participants not putting on their badges may be prevented from gaining access to any of the conference activities by security agents.  Excursion “Owerri 2009” is working on a brief but extremely exciting, highly technical and scientific excursion to participants. The chosen sites will provide an exciting tour within and outside Owerri city. The trip is expected to take participants through naturally serene environments, exposing geological and geomorphologic features. Spouses Programme “Owerri 2009” is providing a fascinating programme of activities for accompanying spouses during the conference. Owerri offers very beautiful and appealing atmosphere for relaxation. There are several areas of tourist attraction within and outside the town. The LOC is considering arranging as part of the spouses programme a courtesy visit to the wife of Imo State Governor, Her Excellency Barr. Chioma Ohakim. All participants are encouraged to come with their spouses to the conference. It is going to be a refreshing and memorable occasion. Students: Students should be aware that “Owerri 2009” affords them the opportunities for individual paper presentation and interactions with senior colleagues from the government, academics and industry. Hotel Accommodation in Owerri Owerri is a unique city that receives many visitors and a major tourist destination, clean and caring. Owerri has many excellent hotels of different categories from the five star. Imo Concorde Hotel, which has excellent and comfortable rooms for guests, to a lot of other good hotels within and around the city that are of moderate charges to meet the various demands of participants. Transportation and Logistics The venue of the Conference, Imo Concorde Hotels is accessible by public transport from all parts of Owerri, facilities for communication will be available. It should be noted that Owerri, the heartland of southeastern Nigeria has an airport which is also accessible by road from all parts of the country. It is planned that transportation will be provided for conveying participants from the airport and other parts to the venue of the Conference. Chapters and Specialist Groups Chapters and Specialist Groups within the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society should make individual arrangements for their meetings. Timing of such meetings should be fixed in such a way that will not coincide with major conference activities.  Modes of Payment Payments of registration fees for resident members and non-member delegates can be made by certified Bank cheques made payable to NMGS Owerri 2009 LOC or by cash/cheques from Corporate Bodies covering the block registration fees for members from such bodies. Personal cheques are not acceptable other than these, cash can be paid at the conference venue. Block registration from Corporate Bodies should be made by sending a list of names and corresponding registration fees to the Secretary, NMGS Owerri 2009, LOC.
