The society was formed on January 15th 1961 when eight Mining Engineers, one Geologist and one Metallurgist met for purpose of founding a professional organisation that would provide a forum for discussing various topics within the ambit of mining, geosciences and Allied professions.
A protem Council set up thereafter prepared a draft constitution and the "Nigerian Mining, Geological and Metellurgical Society" was inaugurated in Nsukka, on the 17th December, 1961. Early Conferences ::.. The first Annual Conference of the Society after the inauguration took place in Jos in August, 1963, and subsequently in Port-Harcourt, 1964 and Ibadan, 1965.
There was a break during the civil war years from 1967 until 1969 when another successful conference was held at Ibadan. Fortunately, with the cessation of the war, the yearly conferences have become regular and have been enriched by the contributions form the growing academic and industrial sectors.
