The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) is a non profit professional organisation. The society was named at its inception the "Nigerian Mining Geological and Metallurgical Society" to reflect the Multi-disciplinary nature of her membership. Membership is open to miners, geoscientists and metallurgists, Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike, who have practised, or are practising their professions within the country.
The society which was founded in 1961 with ten members, had by 2005, grown to a membership strength of over 3,000. The individual and collective activities of members in their various position have led to continued discovery and development of the nation's solid minerals, water, petroleum and gas resources.
In addition, the society continues to exert its influence on government through its yearly conferences, Annual lectures and presentation of policies papers on minerals, energy and water management and development. In 1990, the Mining Engineers and Geoscientists Decree 40 was promulgated to regulate the practise of the earth sciences in Nigeria.
